Game Runs but No Overlay/UI – Overlay & Capture Conflicts
Table of Contents
Summary
If your game launches but you don’t see the expected UI/overlay for your hacks (e.g., aimbot/ESP indicators), something else is likely drawing on top of the game or intercepting graphics hooks. This guide helps you find and disable conflicting overlays/capture tools, make sure they’re truly closed, and re-test with a clean baseline.
Problems you might see
- Game runs normally, but no in-game UI appears
- Overlay hotkeys do nothing; menu won’t open
- UI shows once, then disappears after a few seconds
- Works in one game, but not in another (often a per-app overlay)
60-second quick fix (try this first)
- Reboot Windows (clears stuck overlay hooks).
- Check Status → see Reading the Status Page.
- Fully exit these common culprits from the system tray (don’t just minimize them):
- Discord Overlay, Steam Overlay, NVIDIA GeForce/ShadowPlay, AMD Radeon Overlay
- Xbox Game Bar, RTSS/MSI Afterburner, Overwolf
- OBS / XSplit / Twitch Studio (close capture sources entirely)
- Re-run the launcher/loader and test again.
If the UI is still missing, continue below.
Step-by-step fix (about 6-10 minutes)
1) Turn off platform overlays (per app)
- Discord → User Settings → Game Overlay → Disable “Enable in-game overlay”. Close Discord from the tray.
- Steam → Settings → In-Game → Uncheck “Enable the Steam Overlay”. Exit Steam (tray → Exit).
- NVIDIA GeForce Experience → Settings (gear) → General → Toggle OFF “In-game overlay”. Also press Alt+Z to confirm it no longer opens.
- AMD Radeon Software (Adrenalin) → Settings → Preferences → Disable “In-Game Overlay”.
- Xbox Game Bar → Windows Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar → Turn OFF. Press Win+G to ensure no UI appears.
- Overwolf → Disable per-game overlay in Overwolf settings; exit from tray.
Check: Try each app’s hotkey (Shift+Tab, Alt+Z, Win+G) – nothing should appear if it’s truly off.
2) Close performance/utility overlays
- RTSS / MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, FPS counters, GPU/CPU OSDs, Reshade/Ansel/Freestyle, Razer Cortex, Logitech G Hub OSD, Corsair iCUE OSD, Nahimic.
- Exit from tray or Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Processes → End task).
- If you use ReShade or third-party injectors, remove or rename their DLLs from the game folder temporarily.
3) Shut down capture/recording apps (don’t just minimize)
- OBS / Streamlabs OBS / XSplit / Bandicam / Twitch Studio
- Close the app completely.
- If you must keep OBS open, ensure no Game Capture source is hooked; use Display Capture only for testing.
4) Test a clean display mode
- Switch the game to Borderless Windowed (or Windowed) and re-test.
- Disable third-party screen filters (HDR/Auto HDR/Freesync overlays) for the test session.
5) Re-allow the launcher/loader (prevents silent blocks)
- If your security tool quarantined anything, restore it and allow-list per our Restore & Allow-List.
- If you use Bitdefender/ESET/Kaspersky, also see above guide.
6) Baseline re-test
- Close everything except: game, launcher/loader, and essential system processes.
- Confirm the title isn’t Updating/Down on the Status page.
- Start the game and try your usual menu hotkey again.
If the overlay/UI is still missing
At this point we need specifics about your environment.
Collect this for Support:
- Your Windows version and GPU driver
- Which overlays/capture tools were installed and how you disabled them
- Whether Steam/Discord/NVIDIA/AMD/Xbox overlays can still be invoked via hotkeys
- A short clip or screenshots showing the game running and the missing UI
- What you tried from this page, in order
Then: Open a Ticket. We’ll review and walk you through next steps based on your setup and Status.
